In the Gap'

IN THE GAP is an opportunity to see a juxtaposition of artists who are not accustomed to being exhibited together but are aware to varying degrees of each others work. They share an individual approach to their careers in that while they have all had experience in commercial galleries they also choose to support artist-run and independent initiatives and even organize their own overseas shows.

These artists also share an interest in painting as a contemporary medium and believe that an understanding of art-history is crucial to both the production and appreciation of contemporary art. The "painting" in this show utilizes a number of mediums including printmaking, working in three dimensions and using materials such as metal and aluminium as well as canvas and pigment. Two of the artists are teachers and all are aware of the impact of Aboriginal art in mainstream art practice in Australia.

The death knell of painting has been sounded with great fanfare every five or ten years or so in the art world since the late 1960's - only to return to the fore in some form or another with an exuberance to match it's earlier "departure". The reality is that human beings all have the desire to pick up a stick and leave their "marks in the sand" and always will. New forms will come and go and some will stay the course and play their part in our cultural and artistic heritage providing exciting new frontiers in the creative process. However, in the end the artists exhibiting for IN THE GAP know that something as basic to human creativity as painting is no more likely to disappear than breathing. In fact it is ironic that in this increasingly digital age it is these painters who find they have taken a (paradoxically) "radical" stance.
