Historic Barks and Sculpture Part II
Barks, sculpture, mimih spirits, Yawk Yawks, etchings
Annandale Galleries presents significant works from Arnhem Land, including barks, larrakitj, lorrkon and mimihs from renowned artists such as John Mawurndjul, Ivan Namirrkki, John Bulunbulun, Crusoe Kurddal, James Iyuna, Samuel Namunjdja, Samson Bonson, Gunybi Ganambarr, Gawirrin Gumana, Waturr Gumana, Wanyubi Marika, and Galuma Maymuru.
These private collection works span 1995-2015, having been featured in Annandale Galleries’ many pivotal exhibitions. They reflect the ongoing labour of love which has seen our directors Bill and Anne continually showcase and support artists

Mark Wallinger
Threshold to the Kingdom
Mark Wallinger’s stunning video work, Threshold to the Kingdom, was at the prestigious Whitechapel Gallery when I was recently in London. It was part of a group exhibition called Life is More Important Than Art (that’s why Art is Important). The show was striking, to say the least. In it, artists of various disciplines (video, film, installation, painting) addressed the theme of hope and loss in a post-Covid world. Wallinger’s video was in the last room. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen it.

Julie Harris
I will be good … promise
Julie Harris’ work speaks about relationships to the world and the history of painting. Through her studio practice she is equally at home using the medium of paint and the application of gestural, non-objective, style in both paintings and sculpture. Her work embraces unpredictability and erasure as key features, and through the mastery of diverse elements becomes a demonstration of power harnessed to vulnerability.

Fiona Currey-Billyard
Dark Crossings
Fiona Currey-Billyard makes her official debut at Annandale Galleries with DARK CROSSINGS. Channelling nature and personal memory, she takes the viewer on an intimate journey through abstracted oceans of Australia and Papua New Guinea. Currey-Billyard uses various carbons, paints and shellacs to produce nuanced surfaces and evocative textures, often on stretched linen of a monumental scale. Simultaneously, they are embedded with nails and staples that act as markings for both ocean currents and layered memories of her past, particularly those shared with her father. The punctured surfaces act as a way to communicate the kindness and cruelty of time on the body and our recollections. This unique act of mapping anchors itself to specific moments, people and places, but contains a comforting universality that arrests you, draws you in, enveloped by an indescribable force.

All we have left
Kieran Butler’s debut at Annandale Galleries takes the form of a heartening celebration, tempered with earnest revelations and messages that inspires quiet contemplation.
Kieran’s practice spans across fashion, design, performance, photography, text and textiles, examining intersections of photography, environmentalism and patchwork techniques within an ace-enby-trans framework.
Their work reflects on themes of queer identity and familial histories, accompanied by experiences of intimacy, vulnerability, self-awareness, love, desire and grief. Kieran contributes to the growing literature and visual history on ace-enby-trans lived experiences - resources that were not readily accessible to them as a young person.

Paintings and Poles from Yirrkala N.E. Arnhem Land
“...unless you put the knowledge you hold into a living mind it will die with you.
The designs in these paintings are each a cryptic code that holds the text of hundreds of songs particular to that place and clan in the context of a state of water. A literate person will read that design and sing for hours without repetition. A second person with the ability to read will sing those exact same words. You can record that epic song poetry and transcribe it into Yolŋu matha writing. You could even attempt to find English concepts to match and translate that text to English. Then it would have the weight of a book and we could accept it as knowledge.”
