Lofty Bardayal Nadjamerrek is quite simply a living national treasure. Respected in his own world he has also been honoured in ours with an Order of Australia

A little more than a year ago, David Baker and Drusilla Modjeska visited me at Annandale Galleries carrying with them a roll of barkcloth they had brought back with them from a number of previous visits to Oro Province in Papua New Guinea.

A visit to the studio of Guy Warren is always an event for me. One never knows what they will find in any artists studio,

Next year will mark the fortieth anniversary of the passing of Reginald Weston at fifty-eight years of age. When artists leave us prematurely we can only speculate on what might have been had they lived longer.

I AM AN ARTIST WHO MAKES A GREY PAINTING

Grey. Panels in shades of grey. This image comes to mind when I conjure up the work of Alan Charlton. Veteran of nearly 150 solo exhibitions since 1972 in some of the most prestigious museums and galleries in the world, the vision in his work has had a tremendous impact over the years.

When one first encounters the work of Roger Ackling the response is inevitably inaccurate as to method. One writer described his initial impression as "a few bits of old furniture wood picked up at random and stuck onto the white gallery wall." The wall label lists "sunlight on wood" as the medium. "Sunlight on wood" Now the curiosity is aroused.

John Mawurndjul is, in western parlance, quite simply a star. A glance at his bio in the back of his catalogue confirms his status. He was the first Aboriginal artist to win the coveted Clemenger prize for contemporary art at the National Gallery of Victoria, the first Australian artist - period - to have a major retrospective in an important overseas museum in nearly thirty years and was on the cover of Time magazine in April this year.
