Andrew Leslie
New Installation

ANDREW LESLIE (b. 1956, lives and works in Sydney) is an artist whose work is immediately recognisable, whether it is a large outdoor commission or a small wall mounted gallery work intended for a domestic space. The subject matter is very simple and direct - light and space. Utilising strips of aluminium that are painted on the inside and mounted slightly off the wall, the colour comes from the reflection. Therefore the nature and intensity of the colour depend on the light source employed, whether it be daylight or halogen or a combination, the intensity of the light at the time of viewing, which varies with daylight to the time of day and the weather and the position of the viewer as every angle of viewing produces a slightly different effect. The works therefore are highly interactive for the viewer.

The works looks like sculpture and feels like painting. ANDREW LESLIE is primarily influenced by non objective painting and is well aware of the history of that sort of work but they also function like sculpture in that the issue of depth and space are not just implied, as in much non objective painting but physically realised. A conceptual element is present in the use of reflected words or letters in some works but the overall effect of the distillation of colour and space is a spiritual rather than intellectual position.

Due to the ability of ANDREW LESLIE to cut the aluminium slats to whatever length he chooses, the work has an extraordinary flexibility. It can be modified to accommodate structures such as pillars or architectural fixtures and, like the highly respected British artist Alan Charlton, even go around corners as in the work entitled "Corner" in the current exhibition and featured in the catalogue. ART CONSULTANTS and corporations should take particular note of this exhibition as works may be modified for or commissioned for public sites. In the domestic arena, the works lend themselves to site-specific installation and it is possible for example to make a work that fits into a circular stairwell.

ANDREW LESLIE has had nearly twenty solo exhibitions since 1992 including Annandale Galleries in 2005. Public collections include the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery WA, Holmes a Court Collection and museums in Malaysia and Italy.
