Ever since his first solo exhibition at Annandale Galleries in 2009, GUNYBI GANAMBARR’S star has never stopped rising – John McDonald, art critic for Sydney Morning Herald in his exhibition essay

We are proud and honoured to present this exhibition of the new work of GUNYBI GANAMBARR, his fourth solo show at ANNANDALE GALLERIES since 2009. The exhibition has been three years in the making and widely anticipated by museums and collectors in Europe, America and Australia.

Innovation is the key element in all of Gunybi’s exhibitions and this show is further testimony that he is arguably the most innovative, influential and original Aboriginal artist of his generation.  The most ambitious work in the show Alupanel Buyku 2020 takes a direction in steel that he started with a work that won the overall Telstra prize in 2018 to dizzying new heights.  The work is astonishing in it’s monumentality, craftsmanship and power.  There are new sculptures unlike anything anyone has done before, works on roofing insulation, a kinetic piece that hangs from the ceiling and extraordinary ceremonial poles.

The accessibility of his work is another key element.  While aficionados familiar with Aboriginal art will appreciate the new territory Gunybi is carving out for himself in the continuum of art history, this exhibition could have just as easily been mounted in London or New York and achieve the same results with an audience relatively unaccustomed to Aboriginal art. It is quite simply great art that motivates the senses and emotions of viewers regardless of what background or previous knowledge they bring to the table.

To quote John McDonald once again: Like all great indigenous artists Gunybi is deeply attached to the place where he lives, but he is making art that’s setting the world on fire.

GUNYBI GANAMBARR is the winner of numerous awards including the prestigious overall Telstra award in Darwin in 2018 and the Western Australian indigenous art award in 2011.  His work is in numerous public and notable private collections in Australia, USA and Europe.  These include the National Gallery of Australia and the Metropolitan Museumof Art in NYC,
